Welcome

The Maryland University of Integrative Health is fully committed to creating an inclusive learning community and upholding the letter and spirit of federal and state laws that ensure equal treatment of persons with disabilities. Disability Services and Accessibility promotes disability-inclusive diversity while implementing and coordinating reasonable accommodations and disability-related services that afford equitable access to educational opportunities and activities as required by The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

In determining a student’s disability status, Disability Services and Accessibility is guided by the federal definition of “disability” which describes an individual with a disability as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one of more major life activities of such individual, and a record of such impairment or is regarded as having such an impairment. Some types of disabilities include learning, mental health, attentional, sensory, physical, or chronic health.

Who Section 504 Covers

At first glance, it can be difficult to tell if you’re covered by the protections granted in Section 504. According to the legal text, the law applies to a “qualified individual with a disability.” So how does the OCR determine whether you apply? The provisions define qualified individuals as those with a physical or mental condition that substantially restricts one or more major life activities. The Department of Education (ED) provides some examples of these types of impairments. However, please keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive list.
