Maryland University of Integrative Health is pleased to announce that Leana Wen, M.D., M.Sc., FAAEM, Commissioner of Health for the City of Baltimore, will be our 2017 commencement speaker.
An emergency physician and patient and community advocate, Dr. Wen leads the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD), the oldest continuously-operating health department in the United States, formed in 1793. Under her leadership, BCHD commits its $130 million annual budget and 1,000 employees to improving well-being and combatting disparities through education, policy/advocacy, and direct service delivery.
Dr. Wen’s personal and professional beliefs align with the way we at MUIH approach well-being. “We share a common goal with MUIH in focusing on maintaining health and ensuring well-being for the vulnerable communities that we serve in the city,” said Wen. “I’m looking forward to working together to advocate for a paradigm shift in our approach to health and to find tangible ways to collaborate.”
Dr. Wen is the author of the acclaimed book When Doctors Don’t Listen: How to Avoid Misdiagnoses and Unnecessary Tests and has given six popular TED and TEDMED talks on patient-centered care, public health leadership, and healthcare reform. Her TED talk on transparency in medicine has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.
Born in Shanghai, China, and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Wen graduated from Washington University School of Medicine and the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She has been a fellow and consultant to the World Health Organization, the Brookings Institution, Eurasia Group, and China Medical Board.
